On one and the same exchange, withdrawing the same amount of USDT over TRC20 versus ERC20 can cost several times more one way than the other; put another way, what decides the cost of this particular withdrawal is mainly not the exchange, it's the network you chose. This guide takes that apart.

Withdrawal fees: you've been looking in the wrong place

A withdrawal fee is roughly made up of two parts: the network fee (miner fee / gas fee) and whatever the exchange may add on top. The network fee is paid to the blockchain in question, not set by the exchange; all the exchange gets to decide is whether to mark it up and by how much — and in practice, the gap in cost between networks is usually far wider than the gap between two exchanges on the same network.

TRC20 / ERC20 / BEP20 — how to actually choose

USDT exists across chains: the same USDT can be issued on different blockchain networks, and the three you'll meet most often are TRON (TRC20), Ethereum (ERC20) and BNB Chain (BEP20). The network you pick when withdrawing decides which chain the transfer runs over and how much network fee you pay.

The core logic of choosing isn't "which network is absolutely cheapest", it's "which networks does the place I'm withdrawing to support": if the other end only takes TRC20, no amount of cheapness on BEP20 will help you. If both ends support several networks, then go compare the cost. What each network costs at any given moment moves in real time with on-chain congestion, so the fee shown on the withdrawal page as you place the order is the most accurate figure there is.

The five exchanges: withdrawal networks at a glance

Binance, OKX, Bitget, Bybit and Gate — these mainstream exchanges essentially all support TRC20, ERC20 and BEP20 for USDT withdrawals. The bigger ones (Binance, OKX) usually cover a wider spread of networks, and will occasionally offer some less common ones as well. But which network is open at any particular moment and what it costs is something each of them adjusts on its own; it isn't fixed.

  • Binance, OKX. The fullest set of network options, with TRC20/ERC20/BEP20 all steadily supported — on these two a beginner basically doesn't have to worry about "the network I want isn't there".
  • Bitget, Bybit, Gate. These support the same mainstream networks and are fine for everyday use, but a slightly narrower list of networks does happen, so take an extra look at the options before you withdraw.

What happens if you pick the wrong network

Picking the wrong network has two common outcomes, and they differ enormously in severity:

  • Both the sending and receiving side support it, and your slip happened to land on a network both ends share anyway. This usually still arrives; you may just have taken the pricier route and paid more than you needed to. Not serious.
  • The network you withdrew over doesn't match the network your receiving address actually lives on. Say the other end is an address that only recognizes TRC20 and you withdrew to it over ERC20 — at best the assets are stuck and you need the exchange's support team to handle it manually, a tedious process with no guarantee of recovery; at worst they're technically simply gone, with essentially no way to salvage them.

Put differently, the price of picking the wrong network can be a great deal more than "paying a bit extra in fees". Which is exactly why, before every withdrawal, confirming that the sending network and the network your receiving address sits on are identical matters far more than squeezing out a small fee difference. Here are the steps that most often go wrong, written out as a checklist. Run through it before you withdraw and you'll dodge most of the traps:

  1. Confirm which networks the receiving side supports, first. Whether you're sending to your own wallet or to another exchange account, go to the deposit page on that end and read exactly which networks it accepts.
  2. The withdrawal network and the receiving network must match exactly. Not "probably compatible" — it has to be the same network. This is the one step you can't be casual about.
  3. Take a look at the current fee for each network. The withdrawal dropdown normally prints the figures directly; with several networks side by side, pick the best value of them (subject to point 1).
  4. Make your first withdrawal a small one. When in doubt, send a small amount to prove the whole route works, then send the larger amount — especially with a new receiving address or the first time you use a given network.
